LAST WORKS:
Introducing Fabio Benetti to the London market, Stephen Fry, Londoner long resident in São Paulo, with a long history in visual and text communication, writes:
In his 2019 collection Ruptures, Benetti, a Brazilian of Italian ancestry living in São Paulo, breaks with conventional art – after rupturing his extremely successful career as a lawyer, in 2015, to embark on a world of imagination and inspiration.
He works with minerals – calcium, titanium, concrete, kaolin, lime and several others – which cure and mature, in air and sun, for days or weeks. This opens cracks (ruptures) that gradually grow as the minerals contract. The chemicals of nature – and the nature of chemicals – open up a new world in each work.
In this minimalist Arte Povera from elaborate but basic materials, Benetti seeks the satisfaction of transforming the instincts of his subconscious into tactile image. The moment of creation reflects, he says, the direct product of his subconscious at the moment of the work – assisted always by chance. “Chance is the great decider” – just as it is “a determining factor in all emotions and everyday actions”. The result is a beautiful, beguiling new world of ruptures, cracks, natural filigrees, chasms – often with bright new colours appearing inside alarming crevasses – creating fascinating results.
“You will find people ‘painting’ in oils, acrylic, gouache, watercolours – you name it – but who is creating with minerals? Only me, I think?” – he says.
Research with the public indicates that viewers overwhelmingly respond with pleasure to Benetti’s work, and find his feeling for composition in his creation of textures, colours and surfaces artistically stimulating and satisfying.
He desires that his works be touched. “That is what they are for,” he says.
The Ruptures collection can be seen as the first major mature exhibition of a truly original creator – ready to break international boundaries.
